Another person pregnant in my family/friends. My husband's cousin just found out she was pregnant a few weeks before Christmas. Argh! Very happy for them, though. We didn't know, but apparently they'd been trying awhile. Meanwhile my little niece just started crawling. :) Also, my husband and I are doing really well with our New Year's resolution to eat better and get fit. It's only been a week, but we're over the hump, which is good. Getting closer to starting Clomid, unless the improved diet and weight loss gets me ovulating before we start. Also, very excited-- my MIL and GMIL quit smoking!! This may seem OT, but it was a real concern for us because we don't want our kids exposed to cigarettes and I can't be while pregnant because of my risks for preeclampsia (shouldn't be while pregnant anyway due to the risks of course). The year is off to a good start! It was so bad last year with losing my brother and school being so hard and struggling with the infertility.

A Quick Ultrasound Question... [07 Jan 2010|03:54pm]

pregnant

[babylinden]
I've seen different things in different places, I was wondering if its better to pee right before an ultrasound or not. I've seen in a few different places that it's better to not pee because it's easier to see the baby with a full bladder? But my doctor always asks me if i have to pee again (even if i just went in a cup) right before I walk into the ultrasound room. I figured I'd ask you guys and see what you say. I'll be 10wks 5 days tomorrow and just wanna make sure I get a good shot. Thanks :)

Insurance [07 Jan 2010|03:37pm]

[zechal]
I hate BC/BS....I appealed our original denial letter and after 35 days received another denial of payment letter. I can however request a conference with representation. I'm so mad because I called prior to even going with a midwife to find out if it was covered, was told that yes a midwife was covered. I specifically asked does this need to a certified nurse midwife in a hospital and was told no and given a global birth HPT billing code! My husband and I would have gone with a CNM at our local hospital if we had know it wouldn't be covered.

So you call to find out, get told the wrong information, base your decision on that info, and now have to pay $2000 to your midwife. I don't think that hiring an attorney is going to help...by the time I pay an attorney for their trouble.

Any advice?

For those of you who have dopplers at home..This may be a stupid question, but how do you know it is your baby's heart beat and not yours? I have never used or seen one before, but am thinking about getting one!

Question about Exam [07 Jan 2010|11:51am]

pregnant

[onthebabytrain]
[ mood | relieved ]

Today I had my first appointment (which went great, btw!  Everything looks good.)  Since I had a first appointment last summer with all the tests and everything, I didn't have to get most of them re-done.  The doctor said she didn't need to use a speculum for the tests that still needed to be completed--instead she could just put two q-tips to get some cultures.  The first q-tip was fine--the second hurt like crazy.  I even said "that hurts" to her--it felt like it actually went inside my cervix or something.  She didn't say anything, though.  She left and I actually started crying a bit because I was still in a lot of pain.

I came home and was sitting in bed and there was still a dull pain...but then it became sharper (and felt like it did when the q-tip was actually in me).  Then I got up to pee and...oh man...it hurt SO bad to pee.  Worse than when I had a UTI a few months ago.  I had just peed before the exam, and it was totally fine.  Have you experienced anything like this?  I haven't had this test before...so maybe this is not that unusual?  I'm not sure...TIA!

Edited to add: In case anyone looks at this in the tags, it looks like it is actually a UTI that they think was exacerbated by the swab.  I was just surprised because I've had a UTI before and the symptoms did not come on so suddenly and so painfully!  I think this explains it, though. :)

Knees/ankles just giving out? [07 Jan 2010|08:40am]

pregnant

[lenkapenka14]
Does anyone else have that?
It happened to me a few times by now - I'm standing or walking, on a perfectly level surface and then all of the sudden it feels as if my knee or ankle just no longer exists and I fall down or have to sit down... First time it happened when I was standing and I thought it was just a strange thing but oh well. Yesterday I was walking on the paved street, and all of the sudden my knee was no longer there! :( I fell down (on hands and knees, so little one is perfectly fine, just had a bit of wave there). Not a horribly big deal, except for scraped knees and hands, but I really don't like this.
Anyone else experienced this?

UPD: Sorry, forgot to add - 29 weeks today!

Okay, I dont know if there's any other moms here in the northwest indiana area here. But if there are, there's this awesome group called choices. All about talking about what options are out there with home births, midwives, breast feeding, organic, cloth diapering, etc etc etc. They dont judge you if you dont do any of it though, it's all about knowing what choices are available.

That backstory available. Last nights choices meeting wasnt the usual style, it was more of a meet & greet, everybody just hung out, chit-chatted, a chiropractor was giving out free screenings (mine is tonight) there were massage people with chairs set up. And then at the end they did a raffle. I won a free placenta encapsulation. This fabulous woman will come to my house after the baby is born, and do all the work and take care of all hte mess of encapsulating the placenta for us... for free! a $250 value. w00t! Also won a free week with a local diaper service, but now sure if we'll use it since we intend to use disposables, but who knows, we'll see what happens.

Anyways, just needed to squee a bit. Off to work in the impending snow storm.

Crossposted to my due date community.

Homebirth with housemates? [06 Jan 2010|08:47pm]

naturalbirth

[peregrinefalcon]
First, a quick introduction.

I'm 16 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I'm 30 years old. My husband and I are excited about the birth, and looking forward to a hopefully natural, intervention free experience. My midwife is experienced and comes very highly recommended. So far I've had an enjoyable pregnancy, if you ignore some nausea. Now I'm finally in the second trimester and I'm feeling pretty good. So that's me. In brief.

Second, a question.

Basically, I'd like to have a homebirth, but am worried about how this will work out with our housemates.

I stuck this behind a cut because I got wordy. )

Is it just me? [06 Jan 2010|09:12pm]

Whenever I get very upset or very angry (cry or want to scream ...b/c someone deleted an entire directory off the work servers where I had all my work for this one client b/c the deleter..doesn't realize that he's not the only one using the servers) ... Junior gets the hiccups.

Has anyone else experienced this?

So when I am waking in the morning he always has the hiccups..and when I get upset (angry or sad).

Its just so odd that its THAT predictable.

Risks of IUD pregnancy [06 Jan 2010|10:35pm]

pregnant

[jessknoch]
This community was super helpful to me during my first pregancy... five years ago :). Now I'm pregnant again, but I don't know how long it will last and it's starting to freak me out.

I have a Mirena IUD; it's been in since 2005 after I delivered my first (and only other pregnancy). After some heavy non-menstrual bleeding, I spent six hours at the emergency room (on New Year's Eve, even). The ultrasound technician got some great shots of the gestational sac... right on top of the IUD... and the heartbeat was clear and strong, around 160bpm - she said based on the size I was probably around 7 or 8 weeks. So due in August.

Well, I've since been to the OB/GYN to have them remove the IUD, but the strings were gone - probably up too far - and now I don't know what to do besides wait and hope for the best. I'm scheduled for another ultrasound next week, but I would really love to hear some assurances or stories or links to statistics to keep myself calm (as can be, that is!) in the meantime.

We weren't planning on having any more kids, ever. We got rid of all the baby stuff just last year, all the books and slings and boppy pillows I don't know why I was hanging on to :(. I've read "Parenting an Only Child" and I was ready for that. Now... now I have no idea how to plan the next year.

The worst part is that the OB I saw (I'm new to the area, so this was the first time I met him) said that if the IUD stays in place during the pregnancy, there's a very real chance I'll need to have a C-section. Nothing I've read about even mentions an increased risk of C-section, though admittedly I haven't seen *that* much online about it. I don't want a C-section!! My first one was induced two weeks early thanks to serious high blood pressure issues (and my BP is already elevated this time around, so he told me to take baby aspirin every day) - but I delivered vaginally, and I want to do that again.

Whew, long post. This is the first that I've really told anyone about this besides my husband :). Anyway, hi! And I hope I'm here for a long successful pregnancy instead of a quick end. Thanks all.

Silly Question! [06 Jan 2010|07:30pm]

pregnant

[yooperchild]
I went in yesterday for my first "official" ultrasound (not counting my "OMG I'M BLEEDING AM I MISCARRYING AGAIN??" Ultrasound of two weeks ago) and it was amazing! I got to see a tiny baby looking thing spinning in circles, doing cartwheels, waving & kicking! The doctor showed me the spine, we heard the heartbeat again (after the baby stopped moving for 2.3 seconds so we could finally hear it) and said everything looks like it's going to be perfect this time!

I almost feel like I've left the fear of my miscarriage behind and that come August 2nd (or around there), I'm going to have a baby!

I have two silly questions maybe (I looked in the tags and found some stuff, but not a lot).

1. My second appointment is in 4 weeks.....what happens at second appointments? I don't think I'll get another ultrasound then (even though the doctor told me because of the past miscarriage anytime I wanted to see the baby, just call and they would get me in...I'm trying not to be crazy :-) ). Is there some way they check the baby every time just to make sure it's okay? My next "official" ultrasound is at 20 weeks.

2. I'm starting to have a very visible bump (so much so that co-workers and a few students have commented on it), but I feel like it's so early! I always hear people talk about how they didn't show until 2nd trimester...I'm only at 10 (almost 11 weeks). Anyone else seem to really pop out early?

Thank you! (10 weeks 5 days!)

Updates and more questions [07 Jan 2010|02:35am]

pregnant

[racheloves]
First of all, I let it slip to my mom that I couldn't afford the Hypnobabies study (she and my dad like to buy us everything we can't, and I hate it) and she ordered it for me. I'm extremely thankful! It should be here around Friday. I must admit though, it still makes me feel bad that she bought it.

Second, I had a bowel movement yesterday and had a LOT of anal bleeding. I got it to calm down after several minutes but was still having to wipe every 30ish minutes to keep it under control. My doctor told me to go to the hospital, so I did.

I haven't taken my tour yet, I probably will next week, but my experience there was SO great! Seriously, the best hospital. I felt like I was a queen to everyone just because I was pregnant. They monitored me for preterm labor, which I knew it wasn't, checked my cervix and did an external rectal exam. Nothing.

I was released and my doctor called today to ask me to come in. I did, and she checked me internally but found nothing. This whole time I have been swearing it was hemmroids (sp?), and I thought it was just my luck because I had commented someone's post the other day about how I'd had them for years with no problems.

Well, turns out it's not. So, I have a referral for a surgeon when I am 2 weeks post-partum to get a colonoscopy and a few other things. NOT looking forward to it. Until then, she's got me stocked up on fiber and stool softeners.

My questions:

I posted the other day asking about a Moby wrap. A lot of you mentioned you preferred woven wraps for different reasons. Well, I did some thinking and decided I would eventually prefer woven as well once the baby was bigger. The only woven I've ever known about until you guys mentioned some (the most popular was the Gerisol or something?) Was the Ring Sling, which is the only wrap I'd considered other than the Moby. I can't find a used Gerisol for a price in my range, but I did find ONE Maya Ring Sling. I want to buy it, I really do feel like I'd love it. Still though, I'd like to hear what all of you thought. I will be breastfeeding so I'd also like to know how manageable it was if you wore it when you were BFing as well.

Another question- I have a huge stock of cloth diapers, but they look huge! Are some of them like a Lone size fits all" kind of deal? I'd rather not buy a million sizes but I don't think these will work on a newborn, if even a younger infant. I was going to look into buying different ones, hopefully with velcro rather than pinning the ones I have, so I'd like to know about sizes.

Yet another- my neighbor is due this month with her second child. According to her, she was told that vaccinations are mandatory in CA and so are the treatments given at birth (vitamin K shot, etc). I told her I was certain she'd been lied to. Does anyone know about this? I wanted to do a delayed schedule but haven't gotten around to planning it yet. I'm not doing day care so I'm not too worried, I know I'll be home all of the time as I already am, and my husband has had every vaccination known to man thanks to the military (they vaccinate for every country he travels to).

She had never heard of the Dr Sears books, and I referred her to them. We're delivering at the same hospital, so I read their policies and it never mentioned the option of the treatments, just that they are given at birth. Can they take the option away from me?

Sorry I ask questions so often, I'm getting so close to "that time" and I'm trying to get this all out as not to stress!

pain. [06 Jan 2010|06:22pm]

pregnant

[mynamewastaken]
I'll start with the facts: I'm 38 weeks and at my appointment last thursday I was 75% effaced, 1.5cm dilated, baby is "very low" and I've had on and off tiny amounts of spotting. You know all that stuff that doesn't really mean anything except that the end is in the next few weeks.

For the past couple days I've had pretty much non stop period type cramping along with a sharper pain in my incision from my c-section in 2005. Plus the usual braxton hicks contractions that I've been having for weeks.

I'm not sure whether I should ignore this sharp pain in my incision and just assume it's normal end of pregnancy pain.

I don't really want to phone my doctor or head up to L&D because I don't want them to try to give me a c-section tonight.

If the pain is normal I'll continue to ignore it but if it is something I should be seen for I'll suck it up and go in before my 38 week check up on friday.
